Monday, February 13 Academic Vocabulary – Week 3 Citation – noun [sī-ˈtā-shun] a quotation from or reference to a book, paper, or author, especially in a scholarly work Bell work – Complete Set 42 in 501 book (p. 89-92, #456-467)

Monday, February 13 Finish annotating JFK’s speech. Answer the Reading and Analysis Drill questions on page 454. Create a thesis statement that could be used in an SAT essay based on this speech. Write this statement at the bottom of your annotated copy of the speech.

Tuesday, February 14 Academic Vocabulary – Day 2 Re-write definition in your own words. Do not include the words already in the definition. JFK used repetition, allusion and juxtaposition in his speech. Thesis Statements? JFK persuaded the Rice University audience to go to space by using a motivational tone, personification, and pathos. In this speech by John F. Kennedy, he is preaching about how we can grow as a society and reach the moon together. JFK used repetition, allusion and juxtaposition in his speech.

Thesis Statements? With the right skills and appropriate costs, we will take on the mission to the moon. John F. Kennedy uses repetition in his speech to get the idea across the space race is beneficial to our country. John F. Kennedy tried to encourage the people to support him in his mission to go in outer space by using rhetorical devices. The author uses pathos, logos, and repetition frequently to explain why Americans should be involved in the space race.

Assignment: Write an introductory paragraph for the following SAT prompt: Write an essay in which you explain how President Kennedy builds an argument to expand and move forward with the United States’ space program. In your essay, analyze how Kennedy uses one or more of the features listed above (or features of your own choice) to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of his argument. Be sure that your analysis focusses on the most relevant aspects of the passage. Keep the SOAPStone points in mind when writing your introductory paragraph.
