Title Notes: Ch. 14.2 Totalitarianism Gov. that takes total control over every aspect of public & private life. AKA, centralized Methods of control: Terror, indoctrination, propaganda, censorship, & religious/ethnic persecution. Usually a persuasive & dynamic leader. Provide sense of security Use secret police to crush opposition & create fear among people.

USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) Joseph Stalin 1922, name change from Russia Joseph Stalin “Man of steel” 1928, commanded Communist party after Lenin’s death.

Propaganda & Censorship Biased, incomplete & censored information used to sway people to support totalitarian government. Control of mass media Radio/music/art/books cannot be allowed without permission of gov. Citizens surrounded by false info. Stalin glorified in media.

The Great Purge Terrorizing campaign that targeted people against Stalin Secret police to used to monitor books/mail/phones Children tell police about their parent’s disloyal comments.

Religious or Ethnic Persecution Religion prohibited. Communism ideas forced to replace religious ideas. Leaders blame “enemies of the state” (religion) for the country’s problems League of the Militant Godless, atheist group spread propaganda: religion beliefs to be superstition.

Command Economy: Five-Year Plan 1928, Stalin ordered that the gov. make all economic decisions. Five-Year Plan Set impossible goals/quotas to increase output of steel, coal, oil, & electricity. To reach goal, production on consumer goods reduced-shortages in food, housing, cloth, etc. New plan in 1933

Collective farm 1928, Privately owned farms seized by gov. 25 million Farms combined for families to work to produce food for the state. Kulaks, wealthy peasants who refused to give their farms. (Social History-pg. 445) Gov. killed them & destroyed their farms 5-10 million died from Stalin’s Agricultural Revolution 1938, 90% of all peasants lived in farmland.

Benefits of Communism: Women forced to work by law: career opportunities Since Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 Ppl. Became better educated & mastered technical skills engineering/science/medicine/technology By mid 1930s, Stalin total control Stalin stood unopposed Against creativity b/c it threatened conformity & obedience of citizens to maintain communism.
