Building Our Self-Concept

Question What things prevent us from having a positive self-concept or high self-esteem?

77% Self-Talk Did you know that almost of everything we say and think about ourselves is NEGATIVE?

Self-Talk Definition: Our inner voice What we think to ourselves

STOP! Toughest Critic Our toughest critic is ourselves! Have you ever said or thought the following? I’m so stupid! I can’t do anything right! I shouldn’t even try because I’ll just mess up! I look so ugly today! I’m such a loser! STOP!

You are Listening The brain will believe what we tell it most! We will become what we tell ourselves we are. Thoughts lead to action. We have to “re-program” what we say to ourselves. “Be careful how you are talking to yourself because you are listening.”

What I Love About Myself Your assignment is to list the TOP TEN things you love about yourself. Whenever you catch yourself saying something negative, look at this list and say all ten things out loud. Replace your bad habit with a good one!

Self-Confidence Believing in yourself and your abilities. When you trust yourself to do what’s right no matter what. Take things step-by-step to build self-confidence. Nobody is born with self-confidence. It grows from taking risks and trying new things.

Building Self-Concept Accept yourself Forgive yourself Learn a new skill Reach out to others Be positive

Building Self-Concept Be assertive Make a new friend Improve a friendship Do something nice for someone. Recognize your strong points.

Building Self-Concept Don’t compare yourself to others Set and accomplish goals Give yourself credit for your positive qualities Live within your value system Care about other people Use positive self-talk

Thank You Notes One way people can raise their self-esteem is to “reach out to others”. You will create a Thank You Note to anyone who has recently done something nice for you or helped you in some way. It must be delivered today!  Show the teacher your note before leaving class today.

Summary There are many ways people can build their self-concept. Be aware of your self-talk. Strive to improve your self-concept each day.
