2 Self-Esteem Objectives
Explain where self-esteem comes from. Define self-esteem. Identify 2 characteristics of someone with high self-esteem. Identify 2 characteristics of someone with low self-esteem. Explain how self-esteem effects the other components of health Discuss 7 self-esteem strategies that can be used to increase self-esteem. Pick 1 strategy for yourself. Activity: Give “advice” to others to help boost their self-esteem using the 7 strategies.

7 Accept Yourself I must realize my strengths and not dwell on my weaknesses. I will not judge myself according to unrealistic standards. I must accept the things I cannot change. Physical appearance & life situations

8 Use Positive Self-Talk
Talking in a + way about yourself to yourself + Self-Talk - Self-Talk Good Job! Don’t be hard on yourself I tried my best Better luck next time I look nice today I’m important I’m so stupid I’m worthless I suck I’m ugly No one likes me I can’t do it

9 Be Good at Something Search to find things you’re good at
Cooking, sports, writing, playing an instrument, making friends, listening, games (chess, trivia), spelling, school, fixing cars, singing, dancing, creative, scrapbooking, photography, BMX, taking care of children, fixing hair, typing, drawing, public speaking, organization, acting, magic tricks, staying in shape, driving, computer programming, multi-tasking, hunting, fishing, ceramics, making people laugh…

10 Use “I” Statements By using “I” statements I am taking responsibility for my feelings and words This is an assertive form of communication

11 Develop a Support Group
Learn to rely on others Ask for advice “I never thought of my situation that way.” Choose at least 4 people you trust… 1 must be an adult Coach, teacher, relative, religious leader, Mom, Dad, Aunt Jackie
