Maps help us to study the use of space on Earth. Longitude Lines-Lines that run north and south from pole to pole; they are also known as meridians. Latitude Lines-Lines that run east and west around the globe; they are also known as parallels. They show distance north or south of the equator. Hemisphere-Refers to half the globe. The globe can be divided into the northern and southern hemisphere using the equator and the eastern and western hemisphere using the prime meridian. Maps & Projections Strengths: -Allow you to isolate and focus on a particular area or space on earth. -Allows you to compare features of one area to the features of another area. -Gives you the ability to see the entire surface of the earth at one time. Weaknesses: -It is difficult to put a 3-dimensional object on a 2-dimensional surface without distorting some aspect of the object. -Compare the size and shape of Greenland on a map to the actual size and shape on a globe.
