What kinds of scholarships are available? Merit-based- might be awarded based on academic achievement or on a combination of academics and a special talent, trait, or interest. Other scholarships are based on financial need. Many scholarships are geared toward particular groups of people, and some are available because of where you or your parent work, or because you come from a certain background. A scholarship might cover the entire cost of your tuition, or it might be a one-time award of a few hundred dollars.

How do I apply for scholarships? Each scholarship has its own requirements. The scholarship’s website should give you an idea of who qualifies for the scholarship and how to apply. Make sure you read the application carefully, fill it out completely, and meet the application deadline.  

Protect Yourself From Scholarship Scams You will never have to pay a fee to apply for a legitimate scholarship, nor will a legitimate scholarship program request money to cover processing.  There are no circumstances under which a scholarship provider will need your credit card or bank account information. False organizations claims it will “handle all your scholarship applications” for you

How do I get my scholarship money? That depends on the scholarship. The money might go directly to your college, where it will be applied to any tuition, fees, or other amounts you owe, and then any leftover funds given to you. Or it might be sent directly to you in a check. The scholarship provider should tell you what to expect when it informs you that you’ve been awarded the scholarship. If not, make sure to ask.

Renewable vs. Non-Renewable These scholarship provide funding over multiple years. Many students fail to read the ‘fine print’ on their scholarship award packages Most renewable scholarships come with stipulations and guidelines that must be followed to continue to receive funding. Non-Renewable Means it's a one-time scholarship

Renewable Adhere to Deadlines-  Most scholarships will require you to submit additional documentation once you have been selected as a recipient. Be Aware of Requirements- Most renewable scholarships require students to maintain a certain grade point average, course load and/or enrollment status. Communicate- If circumstances may prevent you from meeting the renewability requirements, be sure to contact the scholarship administrator as soon as possible. Some programs will place you on scholarship probation and give you a semester to bring your grades or enrollment status back up to standard. If you fail to communicate with them early on, you place yourself in jeopardy of losing your funding for the following semester or, even worse, you may lose the remainder of your funding completely.

How does a scholarship affect my other student aid? A scholarship will affect your other student aid because all your student aid added together can’t be more than your cost of attendance at your college. So, you’ll need to let your school know if you’ve been awarded a scholarship so that the financial aid office can subtract that amount from your cost of attendance (and from certain other aid, such as loans, that you might have been offered).

How to Find a Job with No Experience Many people worry that they can’t get a job because they have no experience. Reading a job description Some of you are interested in finding a job. Every job that is posted online will have a description. It is important to read the description to see if the job is right for you. Pick one of the four job descriptions (Hot Topic, SISD college student tutor, American Eagle, or Whataburger) Write your name on the job description Think about some of the skills you have now. Qualifications: if you meet any of the qualifications then highlight them on the paper Duties: highlight any of the responsibilities and duties you know that you are willing to do and can complete.
