Data Management Plans Session 3.2 RDMRose: Research Data Management for LIS Session 3 The Digital Curation Lifecycle Session 3.2 Data management plans Data Management Plans Session 3.2 Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose

Learning outcomes At the end of this session you will be able to: Explain the concept and content of Digital Management Plans Reflect on how DMPs relate to your role Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose

Session overview Why plan? When to plan? What to plan? Examples Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose

Why plan? Because you (and others) might want to know where you’re going Because they make you: funders, mandates and requirements Because it saves money in the long run Because it leads to better quality research and enables high quality curation and reuse (Donnelly, 2012) You can find and understand your data when you need to use it There is continuity if project staff leave or new researchers join You can avoid unnecessary duplication e.g. re-collecting or re-working data The data underlying publications are maintained, allowing for validation of results Data sharing leads to more collaboration and advances research Your research is more visible and has greater impact Other researchers can cite your data so you gain credit (Jones, 2011) Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose

When to plan? DCC recommends three versions: Minimal plan at the conceptualisation or grant application stage Core plan once the funding is in place, covering issues up to the point of long-term management and preservation Full plan that adds issues of longer-term data management Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose

What to plan? DCC checklist: Introduction and context Data types, formats, standards and capture methods Ethics and intellectual property Access, data sharing and reuse Short-term storage and data management Deposit and long-term preservation Resourcing Adherence and review Statement of agreement Annexes Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose

DMP Online The DCC has used this checklist to create an online tool, DMP Online, https://dmponline.dcc.ac.uk It presents a list of questions based on: Research funder Phase of the research project, typically Application and Funded (cf. minimal versus core and full data management plans) An overview of funders’ requirements is maintained by the DCC at http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resources/data-management-plans/funders-requirements Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose

Activity 3.2.1 Examining a DMP checklist Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose

Activity 3.2.1 Examining a DMP checklist You have been called in by a researcher for a meeting about a DMP. Go through DCC’s Data Management Plan checklist (Donnelly & Jones, 2011, http://www.dcc.ac.uk/resources/data-management-plans). The DCC are producing a shorter version of this checklist, but it is not yet available. What are the five things they are going to have most difficulty with? Explain why you chose each item. For each of these five things, who or what could you point them at for a reliable answer? Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose

Activity 3.2.2 Examining examples of DMPs Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose

Activity 3.2.2 Examining examples of DMPs Read a few examples of DMPs: http://relu.data-archive.ac.uk/data-sharing/planning/examples http://www.lib.umich.edu/research-data-management-and-publishing-support/nsf-data-management-plans#examples_proposals http://www.northumbria.ac.uk/static/5007/ceispdf/dmpfull http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/polopoly_fs/1.160585!/file/RRP_DMP_Wellcome_for_SWv4.pdf http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/polopoly_fs/1.158849!/file/dmpt_guidance.pdf Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose

Activity 3.2.2 Examining examples of DMPs Which parts did you not understand? Are these examples of minimal, core or full DMPs? Could/Should the Library provide support on these? If yes: how? If not: why not? Dec-18 Learning material produced by RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose
