Community College Experience First Year Experience (FYE) & Second Year Experience (SYE) Reconstruction FYE for 2017

FYE Suspension and Reconstruction In Spring 2016, BMCC faculty expressed multiple concerns with HD109 and clearly communicated that the course was not benefiting students. As a direct result, the Students First Advisory Committee with the support of Dr. Jim Whittaker, Vice President of Instruction, proposed that HD109 be suspended and not offered in the 2016-2017 academic year. The motion was approved by the Curriculum Committee, and the decision was subsequently support by President Preus. Reconstruction In late Spring 2016, Carl Melle was charged with facilitating the reconstruction of FYE. After the summer hiatus, this process was revisited in October 2016 with the aim of using research, best practices, and known models to draft a framework for FYE. This framework was initially shared at a Students First Advisory Committee in October 2016.

Charge The primary goal is to design a plan to improve the first year experience and contribute to student success in the first year. Secondary goals include integration of the first-year experience with the second-year experience, as well as transfer and workforce preparation. The charge includes developing a compelling vision, using best practices to craft a complete Community College Experience, and to approve and develop FYE for AY2017-2018 as part of a collaborative task force initiative.

Progress Report A delegation of two faculty (Arnaud and Kendrick) and an administrator (Melle) was charged with identifying best practices for FYE. The delegation was sent to the national FYE Conference in Winter 2016. Droves of data is available to support the following finding but the purpose of this summary is to highlight the critical points. The findings are as follows: First Year Experience is NOT a single course. It is an intentional fusion of academic, social engagement, and skills-based opportunities distributed over a full year (potentially including the Summer Quarter). Common Read is theme-based and essential to embed reading, writing, and critical thinking into a shared experience. Connecting students to community college resources allows students to build connections with campus staff that can support their learning. Developing study, test, and time-management skills allows students to become academically prepared for their coursework. Engaging activities and service learning builds connections between students, their peers, and their communities.

Progress Report – Transforming the Framework into a Model The delegations findings were compiled into a framework which was shared with the delegation and a few Student Affairs staff members in October 2016. Input was requested and the framework was updated. The following framework serves as a launching point for faculty. A collaborative faculty-led initiative is needed to shape the framework into a viable model.

Timeline Next Steps... January 2017: Use the framework for a faculty-led initiative to develop a model. In January 2017, invite all full-time faculty and staff involvement with student engagement to develop the model. Possibly set up sub-committees to develop the curriculum and engagement activities for FYE. February – March 2017: Approve revised curriculum. April – May 2017: Identify 2017 academic year theme and common read books, develop pilot summer bridge program, and recruit faculty for summer bridge.

Also in progress... Launch a noncredit Summer Bridge pilot program in August 2017.
