Self Esteem and Body Image

List 15 Words That Describe You…

What is Self Esteem??? A person’s feelings about his/her own worth.

Dove Real Beauty Sketches - YouTube What is Body Image?? How you see or picture yourself How you feel others picture you Dove Real Beauty Sketches - YouTube

Do any of these statements sound familiar? I'm fat. I'm too skinny. I'd be happy if I were taller, shorter, had curly hair, straight hair, a smaller nose, bigger muscles, longer legs. Why do we do this? When did we start? What does it stop us from doing? Dove Camera Shy – YouTube As a teen, you're going through a ton of changes in your body. And as your body changes, so does your image of yourself.

What factors influence our body image?

What would happen if BARBIE were a real person?

Her head would be the same circumference as her waist (meaning she’d have room for only half a liver and a few inches of intestines resulting in chronic diarrhea and malnutrition) Barbie’s neck is twice as long as the average human’s, it would be impossible for her to hold up her head. Her feet are so small and her chest is so large that she would have to walk on all fours! Real-Life Barbie Doll: Model Transforms into Doll-Like Image - YouTube

This photograph of a model has been distorted to give her Barbie's proportions of 39-18-33. Her neck and legs have also been elongated to match Barbie.

Real Women vs. Barbie REAL WOMEN BARBIE Average woman’s height is 5’4″ Their weight is approx. 140 lbs. They wear a size 14 dress Their bust is between 36″ and 37″ (B cup) Their waist is between 30″ and 34″ Their hips average between 40″ and 42″ Their shoe size is estimated to be between 8.5 and 9.5 BARBIE Barbie’s height would be 7’2″ Her weight would be 101 lbs. She would wear a size 4 dress Her bust would be 39″ (FF cup) Her waist would be 19″ (same as her head) Her hips would be 33″ Her shoe size would be a 5

What Does Our Society View As The “Ideal” Woman?

REAL Women vs. Images and Models?? Most models are thinner than 98% of American girls and women. Average Size of real women is SIZE 12 Average Size of Models – Size 0-2 YouTube - Body Image and the Media YouTube - Dove Real Beauty Commercial Featuring Voice of Layah Jane

If Marilyn Monroe were alive today. She’d be too fat to model. Marilyn’s dress size in 1966: 14 Dress size of an average model today: 0-2

Lillian Russell weighed over 200lbs and was a size 18. Hot Babe in the 1880’s 1891 - Ad from San Francisco Lillian Russell weighed over 200lbs and was a size 18.

What are some pressures that face males related to body image?

What Does Our Society View As The “Ideal” Man? 47% of males report being dissatisfied with their body appearance. Studies show that a majority of 11-17 year old boys want up to 35 pounds more muscle, a body ideal only attainable with steroid use. Only 6-11% of men fit this ideal

GI Joe: Then and Now YouTube - Male Body Image - GI Joe 60's to 90's 2000 He would now have a 55” chest & 16” biceps The average male has a 37” chest and 12” biceps (www.genderweb.org) 1965 If GI Joe were a 5’10’’ man he would have had a 44” chest and 12” biceps

Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and Robin in the 1966 TV series. Christian Bale, 2008

What is REAL Beauty?? NBC Broadcast - YouTube Photographer Rick Guidotti focuses on those with genetic conditions to reframe beauty, NBC Broadcast - YouTube

Keep this in mind when looking at magazines and media images…   Media images aren’t realistic… Media images often show unhealthy examples – not “normal” people….

Other things to remember about famous men/women that are unrealistic for the average person… 99.9% of images released in media are computer enhanced… Things like - wrinkles, blemishes, uneven skin tones, sags, bulges, or out of place hairs, can be fixed by a computer before going to print. Often these people have personal trainers, personal chefs, makeup artists, personal shoppers and stylists, AND STILL THE PICTURES ARE DIGITALLY ALTERED!!! Body Image: Media vs Mind - YouTube

Isn't it amazing what a computer can do? YouTube - dove evolution YouTube - The Photoshop Effect

Where do we get our self esteem?? External Factors – parents, teachers, friends, siblings, media Internal Factors – our own thoughts and feelings that we have about ourselves

Tips to Help Build Self Esteem Identify your strengths Try some new things that interest you Set and achieve goals Don’t read fashion/muscle magazines and compare yourself to unrealistic models. Accept compliments Exercise – be active Laugh and smile Do something for someone else 9. Use positive self talk

Self Talk The messages we tell ourselves about ourselves!! We all have messages running through our heads – like a tape recorder – it repeats all the positive or negative things you hear, see, read or imagine.

Negative Self Talk Focuses more on FEELINGS and ASSUMPTIONS Example…. If you get an F on a paper – you might say: “I’m so stupid, I hate this class, I can’t ever get a good grade.” (Negative self talk)

Positive Self Talk Focuses on the FACTS and REALITY not on feelings or things you imagine or assume. Example…. If you get an F on a paper – you might say: “This is just one paper, maybe I can redo it. I’m going to check with my teacher to see what things I can do differently, next time I’m sure I will do much better”

Jessica's "Daily Affirmation" - YouTube  Image if we all started the day like this little girl  Jessica's "Daily Affirmation" - YouTube

Web of Negative Thoughts Often we get “stuck” because of the negative thoughts we think about ourselves…. These thoughts are not based on “fact” but on feelings and on LIES we tend to buy into. Fill in the spider web with all the thoughts about yourself that you tend to get “stuck” on. Some of them maybe you have said to yourself, maybe they are things others have told you and you have believed to be true or have gotten them stuck in your head….
