2 What we will cover in this unit
Body Image and societies perceived version on what is an “ideal body” Weight management and making healthy diet choices. Focus on nutrient dense foods. Is a calorie actually a calorie? Limiting sugar intake and reading/understanding food labeling in the US. Assessing our BMI and current fitness level. Exploring personal preference in regard to fitness equipment and programs. Assessing our own personal diet both IN school and out

3 First, Lets Find Our BMI Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person's weight and height. BMI provides a reliable indicator of body fatness FOR MOST PEOPLE It is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.

4 How to find your BMI Take the BMI worksheet and go find your:
Height. IN INCHES Example 6 foot = 72 inches Weight. IN Pound(lbs) 180 lbs

5

6

7 Essentially: Women Men Essential fat 10-12% 2-4% Athletes 14-20% 6-13%
Fitness                    %          % Acceptable              25-31%          % Overweight             %          % Obese                     %+             38%+

8  In recent years, more researchers argue that it's not the most accurate way to measure body weight. For years, scientists have said that BMI can't distinguish between fat and muscle. A few good examples:

9 At 6’2’’ and 235lbs, this person is considered obese according to the BMI scale

10 At 5’9’’ and 150lbs, this person is in the upper normal category according to the BMI scale

11 Other, MORE reliable ways to measure BMI
Skin Fold Calipers A pair of calipers are used to measure the thickness of skinfolds in order to estimate the amount of body fat.

12 The GOLD standard for BMI
Hydrostatic Weighing

13 Ideal Bodies Body Image

14 Body Image The way a person perceives how his or her body looks is called Body Image. Usually a person compares their body to that of an IDEAL body. Where does society get the idea of what IDEAL looks like? List as many ideal characteristics that you can think of for males and females.

15 Ideal Characteristics
Male -Muscular -Tan -Chiseled -Well proportioned -Broad shoulders and thin waist Female -Thin -Toned -Tan -Tall to medium height -Proportional -Large breasts -Backside

17 In reality….. What determines how a person’s body looks? 1) Heredity
2) Posture 3) Amount of body fat 4) Muscle tone

18 In reality…. Marilyn Monroe wore a size 14
Models 20 years ago weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today they weigh 23% less than the average woman. Male action figures (GI Joe, etc.) have greatly increased in muscular size since 1973; If GI Joe were human, he would have larger biceps than any bodybuilder in history.

19 1960 and 70s compared to 2000s

20 Interesting Study: VS.

21 In reality…. Underweight males have body images just as negative as overweight women’s body images. In one U.S. National survey, women feared being fat more than dying If Barbie was a real woman, she’d have to walk on all fours due to her proportions.

23 Neck Waist Legs Wrists Feet

24 Going to Extremes

26 Questions 1. How do you think body image contributes to a person’s self esteem, negatively and or positively? 2. How do other people hinder a person’s self concept and body image? 3. Can a person have a negative body image even though their physical body is well proportioned and physically appealing? 4. How does society contribute to the idea of ideal body features etc?
