SSarah The Value of Scholarly Communications Programming: Perspectives from Three Settings Sarah Beaubien • beaubisa@gvsu.edu Scholarly Communications Outreach Coordinator MLA Academic Libraries 2012

Why We Established Our Program Support University mission, vision, and values Meet Libraries strategic plan objectives Reframe & expand role of the library Address emerging institutional needs GVSU values collaborative faculty/student research and creative practice. Our scholarly communications program includes partnerships with many student-focused programs and publications. Library taking a leadership role…

Developing & Staffing the Program Getting started… Head of Collections & Scholarly Communication Scholarly Communications Outreach Coordinator Scholarly Communications Associate Student assistant Liaison librarians & library staff Committees Scholarly communications advisory committee Copyright committee University community partners Liaison librarians now have an expectation of integrating scholarly communications into their work, which has been written into all liaison job descriptions. Distributed workload and collaboration help move the program forward. For example, the Scholarly Communications Advisory Committee provides feedback on IR policies, content management, metadata, etc.

Program Components Institutional repository: ScholarWorks@gvsu Education & Outreach Author rights Open access publishing support fund Open access week events Presentations, workshops, speakers Building relationships with campus partners We’re not crusading, but are trying to educate our faculty and university community on issues that are already changing in their disciplines and in scholarly publishing. Organizing regional user group…

Support for Liaisons Infrastructure Environmental scan Retreat Webinars Workshops Facilitating faculty meetings, support, more information, answer questions, relieving liaisons from having to have all the answers immediately. A significant part of my job is to support the work of liaison librarians by creating opportunities for increasing expertise, collaboratively working with academic departments, responding to questions/concerns, providing resources and tools on topics such as copyright, author rights, open access publishing, etc.

Institutional Repository Services Author rights checking/negotiation Digitization Journal publishing Conferences & events SelectedWorks Design Metadata assistance Content Faculty publications Presentations Student works & publications Journals Open education resources Media Data/programs Mix of student and faculty publications, have worked with departments to make sure that we include works which represent them well, what is useful for them to add. Departments have created their own parameters…n addition to providing access and preserving scholarship, we offer many services related to the institutional repository and academic publishing.

What’s Next? Data services Identify & respond to liaison support needs Collaborate with Head of Instruction Continue to develop campus partnerships Develop and implement assessment plan Starting to identify areas where the community needs our assistance (responding to institutional needs as opposed to designing services based on our assumptions). There is growing interest in data management, preservation and dissemination plans/services. Will collaborate with metadata librarian to expand services in this area.

Value to our Institution Increased reach and impact of scholarship Growing interest in open access publishing Increasing awareness of student scholarship on campus and beyond Opportunities to engage with university community & participate in scholarly and creative process
