Maps This power point is over how to read a map and the different Themes of Geography.

Map Skills Map- a visual description of a place. Map Scales- used to measure the distance between places. Legend- the key, explains what the symbols on the maps mean. Title- displays the type of map being viewed. Latitude- (Horizontal) gives the location of a place on earth either north or south of the Equator. Longitude- (Vertical) gives a point that is east or west of the Prime Meridian.

Types of Maps Real Life Physical Map Physical Maps are used to find landscapes and Mountain Ranges.

Maps Cont. Real Life Political Map Political Maps are used to find the location and distances of certain areas.

Maps cont. Real Life Special Purpose Maps Special Purpose Maps are used to find the location of certain institutes and businesses in a particular area.

Charts and Graphs Draw both a Pie Chart and a Bar Graph. Visual Image Definitions Draw both a Pie Chart and a Bar Graph. Pie Charts- Used to measure portions, or percentages. Bar Graphs- used to measure change over a period of time.

Absolute/Relative Location When would you use it? Absolute/ Relative When would someone need Absolute Location? When would Relative Location be useful? Absolute Location is the exact location of a place using latitude and longitude coordinates. ( Galveston is 29 degrees south of Houston). Relative Location means to locate a place on a map, by comparing its relationship to another place or city. (Schlitterbhan is located in Galveston, just 30 miles south of Houston).

5 Themes of Geography Location- The place you are, Could be Relative or Absolute. Place- “What kind of Place is this?”What do you think of places like China or Africa? Human Environment/ Interaction- How do the people adapt to their society? Movement- The movement of people shapes our world. Native Texans, Westward Expansion, Slavery. Region- Focuses on how the government is run, and what is acceptable and what is not.
