The War Measures Act Sir Robert Borden

What is the War Measures Act? The War Measures Act was created in the year of 1914 on August.4. This Act enabled the government of Canada to make arrests, detain and deport any people of foreign origins with the power to use physical force.

What is the War Measures Act? This Act was introduced by Robert Borden, the Prime Minister of Canada from the Conservative Party. This Act stripped away the rights of Canadian citizens and put the country in a state of emergency. It was a preventative measure against enemy spies.

The Effects on Citizens People of Austria-Hungarian and German decent were hit the hardest and found the government imposing new laws for them. These laws included registration with the federal level of government and specific bans on the firearms they could purchase.

The Effects on Citizens The productions of foreign newspapers were banned and came to a halt in Canada. When the first World War began, immigration from Ukraine, Germany and Austria-Hungary was completed cut off.

The Effects on Citizens Most of the 24 labour camps were run until two years after the war had ended. Enemy aliens were also unable to leave the country without exit permits and join any movements. Ex: (communist, socialist)
