Why do we study psychology? We study psychology to gain insight into behavior Why we do what we do, and what our actions mean Psychology- The scientific study of behavior and mental processes This can include both human and animal behaviors

Goals of Psychology Describe- Gather information about the behavior being studied and present what is known. Explain- Explain why people (or animals) behave as they do. Psychologists explain these behaviors using Hypotheses.

Goals Cont. Predict- As a result of accumulated knowledge, they guess what organisms will do and how they will think and feel. (Future behavior) Influence- Seek to influence behavior in helpful ways. Conduct research with a long-term goal of finding out more about human/animal behavior

Vocab Hypothesis- an assumption or prediction about behavior that is tested through scientific research. Theory- a set of assumptions used to explain phenomena and offered for scientific study Usually a complex explanation based on findings from a large number of scientific experimental studies

Vocab cont. Basic Science- the pursuit of knowledge about natural phenomena for its own sake Applied Science- Discovering ways to use scientific findings to accomplish practical goals.

… Physiological- Having to do with an organisms physical processes Cognitive- Having to do with an organisms thinking and understanding
