Why Biodiesel? Environmentally Friendly Reduces dependence on foreign oil. Renewable source Stimulate local economy and American farmers instead of foreign petroleum markets. Provide research opportunities at the university.

Fleet of 30 Diesel Buses 13 Transit Style 9 – Bluebird with Cummins engine 4 – Thomas with Cummins engine 17 Cutaway style 11 – Ford, 7.3 Power stroke 6 – Chevrolet, 6.5 Dura Max

Biodiesel Start Up Began using B-100 in August 2002 Issues at start were: Clogged fuel filters White smoke with loss of power Engines on some models shut down on route A lot of road calls for about 2 – 3 months

Biodiesel Start Up Immediate advantages: Removed clouds of black smoke from bus exhaust and improved the environment especially around bus stops. We received a lot of good press for our efforts with biodiesel both with newspaper articles and television.

Biodiesel Start Up Immediate advantages: USF, Parking and Transportation Services received a Green Fleet award from the Clean Air Partnership Tampa Bay in November We have been contacted by other universities as a consultant as they have proceeded with establishing use of biodiesel on their campuses.

Biodiesel Last Year Started using B20 in January 2008 and went back to B50 at the end of the year. Over 570,000 miles traveled More than 66,000 operational hours.

Biodiesel Observations Engine runs much quieter Unnoticeable difference in fuel mileage Price is comparable with diesel with the current tax incentive applied for using blended fuel.

Biodiesel Observations Over the last 6 ½ years we have used biodiesel made from: –Soy Oil –Palm Oil –Chicken fat –Recycled grease trap oil By observation the soy product has the best cloud / jell point. We have experienced some filtration problems with the chicken fat product.

Biodiesel History August 2002 B100 (almost two years) July 2004 B50 (supply issues) January 2005 B20 (supply issues) September 2005 B99 (tax incentive) July 2006 B50 (to gather fuel data) December 2007 B20 (to gather fuel data) December 2008 B50 ( to evaluate maintenance and fuel issues.)

Biodiesel Recap The university community has expressed support for and appreciation to the Bull Runner Campus Transit for use of a clean, green fuel that reduces noxious smell and smoke from the environment. Over all assessment after 6 ½ years has been positive and we are committed to continue our use of biodiesel.

Biodiesel FAQS Made primarily from vegetable oil but can be made from any fatty acid such as animal fat. See this web site for details on process and other information: You will see biodiesel listed as Bxx where the B indicates pure biodiesel and the xx indicates the percent of the mixture with petroleum diesel. E.g. B20 is 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel. B100 is 100% biodiesel.

Biodiesel FAQS Biodiesel that meets ASTM D6751 is an approved alternative fuel listed with the Environmental Protection Agency Biodiesel is comparable in price with diesel fuel, however should follow more closely the agriculture prices than foreign oil prices.
