When have you seen numbers today?

How can numbers be art? American artist, Jasper Johns believes that even though we use numbers every day, we don’t really think about them.

Jasper Johns wanted us to look at their details and see them in a new way, as art! So, he made paintings of them.

Jasper did the same with other objects, such as maps and flags.

Jasper said that we see flags, maps, and numbers and letters all the time, but we never really think about them. He decided he was going to use them in his paintings so that people could enjoy their shapes.

That’s just what he did. Everyday objects, especially things that are flat, like numbers and flags, became his subjects.

John’s work influenced many other artists and a new art form called Pop Art. This is art in which everyday objects, such as hamburgers, soup cans and comic strips are used as subjects.

Can you turn something ordinary into something Extraordinary?
