The War at Sea Continued… 1. Britain depended on its navy to keep the sea-lanes open for supplies and raw materials, which is necessary because it is an island.

The War at Sea continued… 2. U-Boats

The War at Sea continued… 3. Submarine warfare had already resulted in a shortage of resources for Britain. Germany was beginning to be concerned that the war was taking too long so it introduced this new policy with the hope of completely shutting off Britain’s incoming supplies by sinking every ship approaching Britain, not merely ships from allied countries. It was a desperate attempt to win the war quickly.

The war at sea continued… 4. The Lusitania had 128 American passengers on board. This incident marked the beginning of America’s change in attitude regarding her own isolationist stance and the war in general.

The War at Sea Continued… 5. The Allies introduced the convoy system to protect its supply ships. The convoy system refers to an escort of armed destroyers surrounding the supply fleets.

The War at Sea continued… the sinking of Lusitania, Germany’s decision to implement unrestricted submarine warfare, thereby making American ships targets the Zimmerman Telegram: a plot involving Germany’s encouragement to Mexico to attack the USA.
