The Art of Articles A writing guide

What is an article? A piece of writing usually intended for publication in a newspaper, magazine or journal. It is written for a wide audience, so it is essential to attract and retain the readers’ attention. Can be formal or informal, depending on the target audience. Should be written in an interesting or entertaining manner. Should give opinions and thoughts, as well as facts.

6 steps to write your article Step 1: CHOOSE YOUR TOPIC. (Oopsie… I chose it for you, guys!) Step 2: ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE’S NEEDS. Who is your audience? Children, housewives, doctors… Switch gears and imagine you’re the reader of this article. As this reader, what questions would you like answered?

6 steps to write your article Step 3: RESEARCH. Anecdotes (short, illustrative stories about yourself or someone else) Quotes and examples from people like the reader or from popular books on the subject References to other media (film, television, radio) References to local venues or events (if for a regional/local publication). Step 4: DRAFT TIME! This time when you read your draft, ask yourself: Is it working? Is it too general, too lightweight, uninteresting, unclear?

6 steps to write your article Step 5: MAKE IT SPECIFIC. Double-check to see that you’ve included every pertinent information you wanted to include. Ensure that there are no unnecessary information or details. Step 6: READ, REVISE, REWRITE.
