Where Did the Internet Come From? Starting in late 1960s, multiple computers were linked together for fast academic and military communications. Scientists started sharing jokes, recipes, and other personal information via electronic mail ( ). In the late 1970s, large companies realized the power of communicating via linked computers and began developing related technologies. The World Wide Web was created in 1989 by a British physicist named Timothy Berners-Lee.

What Is the Web Used For? Conducting business is still the fastest growing use of the World Wide Web. Advertising is running a close second. Shopping. Over 50 percent of those who surf the Internet shop for products. Exchanging through the Internet is done by almost everyone.

Who Uses the Web? Over 79 million adults in North America use the Internet--40% of the U.S. population. If this current trend continues, every person in the world would have access to the Internet by the year Average time online increased to 9.8 hours per week from 6.9 hours a year earlier. President Clinton vowed to have every public school classroom in the U.S. wired to the World Wide Web within 5 years.
