Internet Basics

Its all going mobile All of what we have discussed can be achieved via mobile phones! This is also know as Convergence

The Internet = a collection of computers all over the world connected to exchange information

How do you know you are connected?

Surfing / Browsing Surfing is when you look at or browse websites.

To use the Internet First – you will need to be connected. Second – you will need a browser. You will find one of the following icons on your computer. Software that connects to the Internet are called browsers. Double click on it.

Browsers

Less common browsers

Address Bar Browsers have an address bar that shows the web address (also called a URL) of the page you are on. To go to a different page, you can type an address in the address bar and then press Enter (or Return).

Links Most of the time, you will get to a different page by clicking on a link. A link can be text or an image, and it's usually formatted to stand out so you know to click on it. Many text links are blue, and they may also be underlined. For example, this is a link. It will open a web page in a new window, and you can close it to come back to this page.this is a link

A link may lead to another web page, or it could lead to a document, video, or any other type of file. If you're not sure if something's a link, hover the mouse over it. The pointer should change to a hand symbol.

Navigation Buttons Sometimes, after you click on a link, you might want to go back to the previous page. You can do this using your browser's Back button. Once you've pressed the Back button, you can press the Forward button to follow the link again.

Refresh and Stop If a page is taking too long to load, or if you've typed in the wrong URL, you use the Stop button to stop the page from loading.

Important There are some instances where you don't want to use the navigation buttons. For example, in some online stores, you shouldn't refresh the page after purchasing an item, as it could cause you to purchase the item twice.

Search Bar Most browsers have a built-in search bar for performing web searches.

Tabbed Browsing Many browsers allow you to open a link in a new tab. This allows you to keep the current page open instead of going directly to the new page.

To Open A New Tab To open a link in a new tab, right-click the link and click Open in New Tab (the wording may vary from browser to browser). To close a tab, click the "X" on the tab.

Performing A Search There are numerous search engines out there, but the most popular ones are Google, Yahoo, and Bing.GoogleYahooBing If your browser has a search bar you can use that for convenience. Or we can go direct to

How to Search Lets search for recipes When you type into a browsers search bar, it might give you suggestions. These are great because theyll give you suggestions you might not have though about. You can click on any of the suggestions or you can just keep typing. Or using the address bar go to

Lets get results for recipes cookies

To make search more specific We may want to make the search more specific. So lets get rid of all results that contain the word chocolate. This will get rid of any recipes with chocolate. Well now type recipes cookies –chocolate Note there is no space between the minus symbol and chocolate

Search for specific phrase But your words in quotes. If we want to search for specifically sugar cookies, not just cookie recipes with sugar in them, then we put sugar cookies in quotes.
