Human Diversity Gender Race and Ethnicity Culture

Are ethnic minorities underrepresented among psychologists? Early 20th century, psychology was a white male profession Subjects were primarily white, male, American college students Assumptions were made that the findings of such studies would apply to other people

Even the Rat Was White! This classic volume from 1976, written by Robert V. Guthrie, describes the systematic manner in which black scholars were denied the opportunity to study psychology, to publish their work, and to receive awards and recognition. The author examines the racist uses of psychological and others tests, explores their policy consequences, and identifies a number of black scholars whose contributions made a difference.

Sex v. Gender SEX- biological differences in anatomy, genetic, or physical functioning GENDER- psychological and social meanings attached t being biologically male or female Masculine vs. Feminine- These terms are based on cultural notions about the sexes

Gender Stereotypes Characteristics that are assumed to be typical of each sex. Stereotypes could have significant negative impacts on boys and girls. Gender roles-cultural expectations regarding acceptable behavior.

Feminist Psychology: Carol Gilligan Key psychological theories were based on all-male samples. Reports of gender differences ignored differences and similarities. Questions psychologists ask and topics studies reflect what they consider to be important.
