Early Sub-Sahara African History

What is Migration? Migration is a permanent move of peoples from one country or region to another. What famous cases of migration can you name? Why did your family migrate to the U.S.?

The Need to Move "When people move they move for a reason. They move because the population has expanded. They move because the resources which support the population in the settlements have become more or less inadequate. They move because there are changes to the climate and they move for the sake of finding better areas in which to live." - Professor Leonard Ngcongco, University of Botswana

Why do People Migrate?

Bantu Migrations The Bantu-speaking peoples originally lived in the savanna south of the Sahara, in the area that is now southeastern Nigeria. Bantu refers to a language group and means “the people” These West African farmers migrated to the south between 500-1500. They brought their iron technology with them. As Bantu people migrated, they adapted to new environments and created new cultures.
