Characteristics of a good Recipe

A recipe is a kind of plan, or blueprint, to guide you as you cook. What is a Recipe? RECIPE DEFINITION: a set of directions for preparing a food product A recipe is a kind of plan, or blueprint, to guide you as you cook. Recipes tell you what ingredients to use and how to put them together.

Basic Rules for Choosing a Recipe When you choose a recipe, ask yourself these questions: 1. Will the food appeal to the family or guests as well as to you? 2. Do you have all the needed ingredients? 3. If not, can you stay within your budget if you have to buy more groceries? 4. Do you have enough time to make the recipe? 5. Do you have the cooking skills required to make the recipe?

A good recipe has two parts A list of ingredients with all the amounts required Specific directions for combining and processing (cooking) the ingredients

It also includes the following elements: Ingredients listed in the order of their use Exact measurements (amounts) of each listed ingredient Simple, step-by-step directions (steps listed in the order they should occur) Cooking time & temperature Size of correct cooking equipment to use Number of and size of servings the recipe makes That the recipe is a tested one

No-Bake Chocolate Peanut Bars Aka Crunchy Munchy Chocolate Peanut Goop INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup light corn syrup 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed Dash salt 1 cup peanut butter 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups crisp rice cereal 1 cup corn flakes cereal, slightly crushed 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

No-Bake Chocolate Peanut Bars Aka Crunchy Munchy Chocolate Peanut Goop PREPARATION: In saucepan, combine corn syrup, brown sugar, and salt; Bring to a full rolling boil; stir in peanut butter. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla, crisp rice cereal, corn flakes, and chocolate chips. Press mixture into a buttered 9-inch square pan. Refrigerate for 1 hour to firm up. Cut into small squares to serve. Store in refrigerator. Makes about 20 peanut butter bars.

Notice specific directions: A recipe ‘you have never made before’. No boxes, mixes, etc. This assignment is also an option for those who did not participate in a food lab. Each missed lab requires a complete ‘homework’ assignment to make up for the missed lab
