The Narrative Paragraph and Topic Sentences

Narration Writing that tells a story of an event or experience Contains a beginning, a middle, and an end

Good Narration Reveals something of importance to you (your main point) Includes all of the major events of the story Uses details to bring the story to life Presents the events in a clear order, usually according to when it happened

Common Time Transitions Before After During First Next Second Then Finally While Later At last Last Eventually Meanwhile Since Now Soon When

Topic Sentences Gives background information about the action that is going to happen Sets up the story Point of the narrative & tells what it is about Usually the first or second sentence of the paragraph

Effective Topic Sentences Your topic sentence should state the main point of your paragraph. Be sure to choose a topic that is not too general or too specific. Make sure your topic sentence is a complete thought. Avoid announcing your topic. Example: I will talk about the reasons for the popularity of reality television shows.

The IVF Method 1. IDENTIFY the item 2. select a VERB 3. FINISH the thought 4. Copy the sentence to look like a real sentence. Edit the sentence to fix the spelling and capitalization issues. Make a short outline or list of facts you will use. You are ready to write your paragraph, so what are you waiting for?
