How Does the Math Academy Serve Students August 16, 2018

In the community college setting: What percent of students are unprepared for college level courses and need to take remedial English and/or math? What percent of students complete the remedial math sequence?

How does this impact faculty and the community?

Does a student's failure to complete the remedial math sequence indicate that they are limited in their ability to learn math?

Developmental Education Initiative Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Goal was to reduce or eliminate the need for developmental education Included four major initiatives: Boot Camps Accelerated Math Accelerated English Early Support Program

Completion by Design Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Goal is to raise community college completion rates Strategic Priorities Accelerating through the pathway Redesigning pathways Proactive student support Policy changes

Math Academy structure Offer 3 courses: MAT 100, MAT 200, MAT 300 (in Fall B) Each course contains 3 modules. One book, one access code for all three courses Students can finish multiple classes within one semester but only pay for one Students proceed at their own pace within deadlines Pre-test allows students to demonstrate competence and skip modules

Math Academy structure Math Academy classes are stacked, which means that all 3 levels are taught in the same room at the same time. Students assigned to the Math Academy are allowed to drop in, which means that an instructor may be helping other students who are not assigned to their section. Work as a team with other instructors, professional tutors, student tutors and the coordinator. If a student does not meet the requirement of finishing a course in 8 weeks, they are not penalized. They have another 8 weeks to finish the course.

How do students learn the content? Guided notes eBook Video lectures MyMathLab homework and quizzes Practice tests Instructors, coordinators, professional tutors and student tutors work one-on-one with students to support their learning

Student Grades MyMathLab Homework (90% minimum) MyMathLab Quiz (70% minimum) Written practice test Written module test for each module Written final exam for each course
