Rabbi Israel "Si" Dresner, Name: Period: The Freedom Riders Directions: Around the room are short biographies of the original Freedom Riders and excerpts from “Letter from Birmingham”. As you walk around the room fill in THREE relevant facts about the riders. The facts should relate to their importance in Civil Rights Movement events and lasting affects on future Civil Rights Movements. Answer the questions about MLK’s “Letter from Birmingham” as you reach the different stations. Letter from Birmingham Jail Station #1 King faced criticism for being in Birmingham as an outsider. Explain this criticism, and his response to it (his rationale for being there). Station #2 Describe the four basic steps for a nonviolent campaign. Describe the circumstances that lead up to King’s nonviolent direct action approach in Birmingham. Station #3 Dr. King describes what a just laws look like. Additionally, he explains at length some ways in which laws can be unjust. Define King’s description of just vs. unjust law and use them to create a “just law rubric” or “just law checklist”. JUST LAW: UNJUST LAW: A Call For Unity Letter from Birmingham was written in response to this document by white southern clergymen condemning MLK’s actions. How is King viewed by fellow clergymen (church leaders)? USE EVIDENCE FROM THE TEXT. How does he feel about being viewed this way? Is non-violent civil disobedience effective? Should young people be involved in social activism?
