AS Media Studies Thinking creatively

Coming up with ideas Often the most difficult part- often too complicated- often not planned in enough detail

Thinking creatively part 1 6 minute challenge: random wiki article for film title random object random location put them together to create an idea

You will be given a wiki random article as the film title  You will pick a random object from the envelope  You will pick a random location from the envelope

You have six minutes to come up with a CONCEPT / SYNOPSIS for a film, including the genre  You will present this back to the class  YOU MUST RECORD ALL OF THIS ON YOUR BLOG - make a video of the making process

6 minute challenge part 2 Identify an ‘opening camera angle’ Identify an ‘opening shot type’ Describe the sounds that you will hear in the opening, including foley, sound effects, music Blog your ideas

6 minute challenge part 3 change your location - how could this affect your opening sequence? change the object - how could this change your opening sequence?

Thinking creatively part 2 Creativity ‘consequences’ Take a piece of lined paper  Take it in turns to write an answer to the prompts Fold your answer over (don’t let anyone else see it) and pass the paper to the next person in the group

Person 1: writes a name (could be a person, a street name, a place name or even a country name). Fold your answer over and pass it on Person 2: writes the name of a prop and set (cannot bed rugs, knives, guns or a hoodie!). Fold your answer over and pass it on

Person 3: writes the name of a genre Person 3: writes the name of a genre. Fold your answer over and pass it on. Person 4: writes an everyday scenario. Fold your answer over and pass it on.

You now have 5 minutes to turn the answers into an opening idea for a film. Record this process on your blog. Be ready to feedback after 5 minutes.

Thinking creatively 3 Head-on 40 minute planning activity Thinking Creatively – Inspirations and Influences In the media industries directors, producers and writers take time to develop their creative ideas. A “head on” is when the initial inspirations and influences that might make some contribution to their final ideas are noted down.

These inspirations and ideas don’t have to just come from the same type of media texts, they can come from anything, and they often result in the production of a mood board that establishes the tone, the atmosphere, colours and key influences and inspirations that are likely to be seen in the final product and help to help to develop ideas further.

You are going to complete your own HEAD ON activity but with a focus on films, or moving image texts. To complete this your are going to: Use the mind map overleaf to map out your inspirations and influences. Using any of the free apps listed below, or any other digital app or software of your choosing, create a mood board that visually collages together your inspiration and examples noted on your map . Pic Collage . Morphillo . Inkive . Curator . Popboardz

3. Post your mood board to the blog and explain why each example you use influences you.
