BHS Course Selection Process 2017-2018

Role of the Advisor Academic Development: assisting students goal-setting, problem-solving, and decision-making Career Development: assisting students in exploration, goal-setting, and future planning Personal and Social/Emotional Development: assisting students in regards to individual needs, collaboration/consultation with parents and staff, and providing appropriate school and community based referrals/supports 

Graduation Requirements Required credits are usually earned in the following years: Freshman Sophomore English (1) English (1) Mathematics (1) Mathematics (1) Biology (1) Physical Science (1) World History (1) Phys. Ed. (1) Phys. Ed./Health (.50 + .50) American History (1) Electives  Electives

Graduation Requirements Junior Senior English (1) English (1) Mathematics (1) Phys. Ed.(1) Science (1) Electives Gov./Econ. (.50 + .50) Other Phys. Ed.(1) Electives  Students must earn a minimum of 23.5 credits in order to graduate from BHS. Students must sit for the state mandated exam in order to graduate from BHS.

Class Membership Requirements Freshman: Promotion from Grade 8 Sophomore: Six Credits Junior: Twelve Credits Senior: BHS class schedule sufficient for graduation in June (16.5 credits)

Course Selection How? Advisor speaks to students (individually, small groups, etc.) Advisor and student choose courses based on goals, career plans, needs, teacher recommendations, 4 year plan, IEP requirements, test scores, college requirements, etc. Fill out Course Selection Sheet together: copies made for student, parent, and advisor When? November until February

FYI Courses will most likely be offered, but not guaranteed Course offerings are not finalized until registration time in August After the semester begins, students have FIVE days to make schedule changes for reasons listed in the BHS handbook and course guide only. We do not change schedules for teachers, lunches, order of classes, PE, etc. ***DISCUSS HOW THE SELECTIONS DURING COURSE SELECTION TIME DETERMINE WHAT CLASSES RUN AND HOW MANY SECTIONS OF EACH CLASS IS OFFERED. WE CANNOT CHANGE ELECTIVES IN AUGUST BECAUSE WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH SPOTS TO CHANGE STUDENTS TO OTHER CLASSES.

NCAA The NCAA Eligibility Center is a part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and was created to ensure that students are prepared to meet the academic rigors of college. You will not be eligible to play college sports or get an athletic scholarship from NCAA without registering and being cleared by the NCAA Eligibility Center. Registration is a one-time fee of $80 and can be done on the NCAA website. It is recommended that student athletes should register with the NCAA eligibility center at the start of their junior year in high school. There is no actual registration deadline, but you must be cleared by the NCAA before you can receive a scholarship or compete in your sport.

How to Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center Create an account on the website. Parents can create an account for their student Pay $80 dollars ($135 for international students). Fee waivers are available to student athletes. Submit official high school transcripts from your Guidance Office Have the appropriate testing agency send official copies of ACT (or SAT) scores Any time you take the ACT or SAT, have your scores sent directly to NCAA (#9999). Complete the amateurism questionnaire online When you graduate from high school you need to request final certification and have your high school send your final transcripts and proof of graduation

Student Role For NCAA Be aware and understand NCAA initial-eligibility requirements! Understand what classes you will need in order to make the initial eligibility. Be aware of your high school’s list of NCAA approved courses. Register on the eligibility website at the end of your junior year. Pay your registration fee and follow up with all instructions. www.eligibilitycenter.org. It is your responsibility to write letters or make phone calls requesting information about each college. Keep updated, organized files with college information. Keep updated files on coach contacts and information discussed. Keep a list of your priorities for selecting a college. All Club Athletes and BHS Athletes are responsible for seeking out their coach and/or advisor if they are interested in NCAA

How to prepare for your course selection meeting: Review courses being offered for the 2018-2019 school year Review and understand prerequisites for courses- This info can be found on the BHS website- Course Description Guide Have a list of electives you are interested in taking- Top 4 choices! Decide between regular level classes, honor classes, and AP classes for your core classes- Do I need a teacher recommendation? Are you an athlete? Are you planning on participating in college? Make sure you tell your Advisor your athletic plans for college!

How to prepare for your course selection meeting: Are you applying for any BACC courses? If so, remember…these will take up 2 periods! BACC applications are due December 8! Students who will be a junior or senior next year: Are you going to be PE Exempt? If so, make sure you tell your Advisor when you meet! Must have PE Exempt form! Are you going to register for Driver’s Education at BHS? If so, make sure you tell your Advisor when you meet! Must have permission form completed by parent. Students who will be a senior next year: Are you planning on graduating early? If so, make sure you tell your Advisor when you meet!

What to expect from your Advisor during course selection: Your Advisor will: Help you choose classes that will prepare you for your after high school plans/career plans…using your 4 year plan as a guide. Look at teacher recommendations, MAP scores, previous grades, etc. in order to help you choose the best courses for you. Listen to your concerns, wants, needs, etc. when deciding between courses and help you reach a decision. Answer any questions you may have about courses.
