The positive impacts and benefits of becoming a World Health Organisation Age - Friendly City June 2015 - Cardinia Shire Age Friendly Strategy adopted Goal: “to create an ‘age-friendly’ community for Cardinia Shire residents” Oct 2015 - Cardinia submits Age Friendly (WHO) application Feb 2016 – Cardinia receives Age Friendly recognition from WHO

Value recognised by Cardinia staff Team Leader Provides a framework for Council to encourage and promote healthy ageing Assist Council to adjust their structures and services to the needs of older people Manager Improved design in use and functionality with the physical environment, creating much more adaptable spaces and longer lasting assets Has provided a greater sense of interaction with our Community and more importantly a mind-set focus for us on best practice mobility.  Growing interaction with our Community It aligns and supports with sustainability direction Provides clarity on accountability and role of Local Government, their purpose for the Community The improved environments help to financially sustain Local Government, as no need to re-work newly built assets for the future.

Value recognised by Cardinia staff GM Allows an age-friendly lens to be applied over all our planning and development to ensure that our facilities and services are inclusive for all. Enables our older people to have a voice and choices about what happens in the Shire.  They are now active contributors to, and participants in, prioritisation of support activities. Facilitator Our membership assists us to frame a new conversation about how we participate in our economic and community life as we age.   As we are now living longer the domains provide us with clear guidance in our planning to develop community social and built infrastructure. This guidance supports our community through the life course with benefits to all residents.

Criteria for membership Did you know? You are not required to have fully achieved “age-friendliness” at the time of your application Your application must demonstrate your City is in the process of working towards it, with the commitment of your organisation at a political/ senior leadership
