DLR Notes- Comma Usage Monday, November 5, 2018 Commas customarily indicate a brief pause; they're not as final as periods. However, they are often overused, so if there is not a rule, don’t use a comma. Series or List- Use commas to separate words and word groups in a simple series (or list) of three or more items. Coordinating Adjectives- Use a comma to separate two adjectives when the adjectives are interchangeable (describing the same word). Compound Sentence- In sentences where two independent clauses are joined by coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS), put a comma before the conjunction. Introductory Words- Use a comma after certain words that introduce a sentence, such as well, yes, why, hello, hey, etc. DLR 10/26 - 10/30
