Forces

What is a Force? Force is a push or pull that changes an objects speed, direction, or shape/size. It is measured in Newtons (N). One (1) is equal to the amount of force required to accelerate 1 kg by 1 /s2 Draw an example of… Change in Speed Change in Direction Change in Shape or Size

How is Net Force Calculated? What is Net Force? Net force is the combination of all of the forces acting on an if the object is not moving. PULL PUSH If the force acting on an object are in the same direction they add together to form the net force. 10N + 10N = 20N 10N 10N If the force acting on an object are in the opposite directions the net force is the difference between the two forces and the object will move in the direction of the larger force. Balanced and Unbalanced Forces Forces are said to be balanced if their effects cancel each other out and there is NO CHANGE in the objects speed, direction, or shape. What is Weight?

Weight! An object’s weight is dependent upon its location. The Earth’s larger mass = a stronger gravitational pull than the moon’s. Measuring weight not only depends on the acceleration due to gravity, but also the mass of the object. More Mass = More Weight The unit of measurement for weight is the Newton (N) 1 N is the amount of force required to accelerate 1 kg by 1 m/s2 Weight is the measurement of the force of GRAVITY on an object that has mass. It can be measured using a SPRING SCALE
