Matter and its Changes Properties of Matter

Two Vocabulary Words Intrinsic – refers to a description of a system that is inherent to the substance in that system. These are nature-given characteristics. Extrinsic – refers to a description that is dependent on the amount of the substance in the system. These are not nature-given characteristics.

Properties : Nature-given characteristics of a material that enable us to identify, distinguish, and separate that substance from other substances. Chemistry defines chemical properties, physical properties and a set of descriptions that are NOT properties.

Physical Properties These are characteristics of a pure substance as it “sits alone”. There is no discussion of whether the substance will chemically interact with another substance. A list of physical properties is presented on the next slide.

Physical Properties : Color Odor Texture Taste Hardness Melting Point Boiling Point Crystal Structure Density Electrical Conductivity Ductility Malleability Luster Magnetic Permeability

Chemical Properties These are observed behaviors of a pure substance that describe the chemical interaction of that substance with another substance. This differs from the physical properties in that the substance is no longer “alone”.

Chemical Properties : Reactivity in : Air Water Acids Some other substance Solubility : Whether one substance may be dissolved in another substance.

Not Properties : Size, Volume Mass, Weight Length, Width, Height Shape Temperature Phase These descriptions do not enable us to identify, distinguish, or separate based on chemical identity

Questions: Are physical properties intrinsic or extrinsic? Be able to justify your answer. Are chemical properties intrinsic or extrinsic? Be able to justify your answer.
