Properties and or Changes
Physical and Chemical Properties and or Changes

Properties of Matter Properties Extensive properties
A description of a substance Extensive properties Depends on the amount of matter in a sample Examples: mass, volume Intensive properties Depends on the type of matter not the amount of matter

Physical Properties A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance Examples of physical properties Color shape Melting point boiling point Density malleability Odor hardness Solubility electrical conductivity

Chemical Properties Relates to a substance's ability to undergo a change that transforms it into different substance Examples Flammable Oxidizes Reduces Reacts with acid Rusts

Practice Indicate whether the following are physical (P) or chemical (C) properties Boiling point Ability to rust Density Ductile (capable of being shaped or bent Flammable Dissolves in water Smells of lavender Reacts with acid to form hydrogen Magnetic

Physical Changes Any change that does not result in formation of a new chemical In a physical change the physical properties do not change For example if you put salt in water what do you get? A new substance is not formed Examples Melting ice sawing a board Making Kool-aid

Chemical Changes Any change that results in a new chemical being formed The signs of a chemical reaction A color change A temperature change Formation of a precipitate Usually a new color Bubbles Light A new smell

Practice Indicate whether the following are physical (P) or a chemical (C) change Salt dissolves in water Acid reacts with magnesium to produce H gas Iron rusts Milk sours Ethyl alcohol evaporates Pizza bakes in an oven Water freezes A 2x4 is cut in half A phone is recharged
