Colonial Resistance and Rebellion #5 Chapter 2 Section 1 Colonial Resistance and Rebellion Objective: Learn how the American colonists rebelled against the British and declared independence.

The Colonies Organize to Resist Britain Proclamation of 1763: British prohibit Americans colonists from settling west of the Appalachians. Why??? French and Indian War (1754-63): British defeat French but British left with war debt. Tax colonists

British passed the: Sugar Act (1764)- tax imports, end smuggling. Stamp Act (1765)- tax printed documents. Townshend Act (1767)- tax imports (lead, glass, paint, and tea). Hostilities rise between the Colonists and British.

Tension Mounts in Massachusetts Boston Massacre 1770: British guards fire on a Colonial mob. Five Colonists die. Townshend Act was repealed. Tea Act (1773) was passed by British in an attempt to save the British East India Company. This act allowed the Company to sell tea to Colonies without being taxed. British control tea market.

Boston Tea Party (1773): Disguised Boston rebels dump 18,000 pounds of British tea into Boston Harbor. British are quite angry. Pass the Intolerable Acts: Closed Boston Harbor. British soldiers to be housed in vacant private homes. Boston placed under martial law.

One direct result of the Intolerable Acts: 1774 First Continental Congress meets and declares Colonial rights. If British use force then Colonists will use force.

The Road to Revolution Fighting at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts Minutemen (Colonial soldiers) vs. Redcoats (British). Minutemen stored guns and ammunition. Redcoats march to Lexington to seize these weapons. Minutemen defeat Redcoats in battle of Lexington and Concord.

The Second Continental Congress May 1775 in Philadelphia. Colonial militia renamed Continental Army. George Washington appointed its Commander. Issue: Independence (Patriots) vs. Reconciliation (Loyalists).

Review Q’s Explain how each of the following had a negative impact on the Colonists: Proclamation of 1763- French and Indian War- Sugar Act- Tea Act- Intolerable Acts-

The Battle of Bunker Hill 1st large-scale engagement of the American Revolution, fought on June 17, 1775. Colonists lose 450 men. British suffer over 1,000 casualties. British loss blamed on questionable tactics and overconfidence.

Olive Branch Petition Second Continental Congress sent King George III a petition urging a return to “the former harmony” between the British and the Colonists. King George III rejected it. REJECTED

The Patriots Declare Independence John Locke: Enlightenment thinker who inspired the Colonists. Locke stated: People have natural rights to life, liberty, and property. People consent to obey a government that protects these rights (social contract). People can resist or overthrow a government if it violates their natural rights (breaks social contract).

Thomas Paine: Political philosopher who also inspired the Colonists. Published a 50-page pamphlet titled Common Sense in January 1776. Paine attacked King George III. Argued for American independence.

Thomas Jefferson chosen to prepare the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson was inspired by John Locke. “All men are created equal.” July 4, 1776 the Second Continental Congress delegates adopt the Declaration of Independence…. Why??? The British had taken away the Colonist’s rights of Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness.

Ch.2.1 Q’s--- Use complete sentences or write questions Why did the British begin to tax the Colonists? List 3 ways in which the Colonists responded to the taxes. What were the causes and outcomes of the fighting at Lexington and Concord? How specifically did John Locke and Thomas Paine contribute to the Colonists’ decision to declare independence from Britain? For what reasons did the Colonists declare their independence from Britain?
