Going digital: our next steps Sean Donaghy – Director of eHealth, HSCB Will Smart – Chief Clinical Information Officer, NHS England

Supporting Transformation through Encompass (and the rest!) So, why do we want to do this? Sean Donaghy Director of eHealth

Supporting Transformation through Encompass ( and the rest!) We have a track record Change is coming whatever path we choose, so let’s aim high (There are 1.8m of us, we’re a modestly sized STP in English terms) We know how tough the change will be, and what it will take for all of us to make this one a success for the service

We have a track record Digital Primary Care Digital Radiology NI Electronic Care Record, > 20,000 users, firing ambition for more An understanding of what the level of information and joined up care processes could be

Change is coming, whatever path we choose Replace our core Acute information systems by 2021 Support staff with e-Prescribing and Medicines management, order communications Introduce digital noting Should we aim for more?

Let’s aim high One care information platform for joined up care processes across HSC teams, settings and organisations. Sharing information with patients, clients, carers and their families Better insight and information for planning Better support for research Better capacity to test and evaluate innovations, and support the spread of what works

We know how tough the change will be… Agreeing care processes across the HSC, ‘80/20’ Supporting staff to move to digital, including mobile / remote working care delivery Supporting organisations to implement very large scale change Supporting patients and users to get the best from digital Helping citizens to understand how we use their information to support better care, and how to say no when they choose

NICON 2018 Going Digital Will Smart CIO, Health and Social Care

Four critical challenges Improve providers’ digital maturity Connect and integrate the health and care system Better use of data and information Transform digital services for the public

Public appetite for digital health services Public Health England’s Sugar Smart and Food Smart apps have been downloaded 3.4M times 1 in 20 searches are health-related NHS Choices Google Patient Online Apps More than 12M people have signed up More than 1M of these view their record every month Gets 1.5M visits a day This slide is for any members of the audience who may still doubt that there is a public appetite for digital health services. We don’t need to look very far to find examples of where significant numbers of people are engaging with digital tools and information to manage their health and care better.
