Welcome Volunteers Urbana Elementary School

Based on Character Counts Program School Philosophy Based on Character Counts Program Trustworthiness Respect Responsibility Fairness Caring Citizenship

UES is a Positive Behavior School Respect Myself Others My Surroundings I make healthy choices. I use a quiet voice and good manners. I leave the cafeteria better than I found it. I make safe choices. I keep my hands and feet to myself. I use the playground and equipment appropriately. I listen, follow directions, and do my best work. I allow others to work and learn. I take care of the things around me. I flush, wash, and leave. I respect the privacy of others. Clean in…clean out! Classroom Bathroom Recess Soaring With Pride Cafeteria

Discipline Discipline of all students is to be done by the classroom teacher. If you are working with a child or a small group and difficulty arises, let the teacher know immediately. Remember it is the behavior of the student we disapprove of, not the student.

Confidentiality What you see and hear at the school stays here. Contact the teacher or an administrator with any concern that you may have. Please fill out the Confidentiality Agreement if you have not in the past.

Respecting Instructional Time When you come in to volunteer, this is NOT the time to have a meeting with the teacher to discuss your child’s progress. If you need to meet with a teacher, please set up a different time and place that is convenient to both. Please respect the teacher’s planning time.

Field Trips Parents are required to have been trained as a volunteer. Please model Character Counts behaviors. PBS vocabulary should be used to reward positive behavior and remind students of our behavior goals as a school.

Reporting Suspected Child Abuse or Neglect Address your concerns with the teacher and/or an administrator.

Teachers rely on you to be a key player in the instructional program. Attendance Teachers rely on you to be a key player in the instructional program. Please call the school if you are unable to volunteer on your scheduled day. 240-236-2200

Parking The Fire Department graciously allows us to use their parking lot. They ask that we park below the bridge in order to leave parking spaces near the entrance for the fire personnel and visitors. Please leave the staff parking lot spaces open for staff who go between schools or to and from meetings.

Sign In All visitors coming into the school must sign in and wear an identification badge. The computer for visitors and volunteers is located on the counter in the front office. This is a state law.

Logging In Volunteer Hours Nikki Cicerone has developed a computer program that will record and total your volunteer hours. Please note your children’s names & teachers in the program. Note that if you do not sign out, the computer records only one hour. If you work at home, please keep a record of your hours there. You can send it in by April 30th and it will be entered in the computer.

Volunteer Log Program Tutorial

Fire Drills Everyone must leave the building. Exit with the nearest class.

Universal Precautions In the event of a student injury: Contact the teacher. Contact the office or health room. Request a pair of rubber gloves from the classroom teacher in the event of bodily fluid contact.

These are located in the front hallway. Restrooms These are located in the front hallway.

Emergencies To report an emergency - call the office on any school phone by dialing 62206 or 62211.

Dress Code As volunteers you decide Urbana’s dress code. Dress appropriately for your task. For example, your dress would be different for a field trip to a farm than a regular volunteer day.

Personal Belongings Please lock your belongings in your car. Coats may be kept in the classroom - please check with your child’s teacher.

Personal Health Concerns Each volunteer will have to fill out an emergency card. All information will be held in confidence.

Mailboxes If you have a note or other materials for a staff member please give it to an office staff member. Mailboxes are for staff members only.

Phone Calls Phones are generally not used by volunteers unless there is an emergency. Cell phones should be off/vibrate while you are in the building. Please check with the office staff, they can assist you with getting an outside line.

Staff Lounge The staff lounge is open only to the staff. Please do not use the lounge as a place to do volunteer work. The PTA room is always available for your use.

Lunch You are welcome to join your child in the cafetorium for lunch any day you are here volunteering. The cost for an adult lunch is $3.75.

Urbana Elementary Team! Thank you for being such a valuable partner to the Urbana Elementary Team!
