Rikki – Tikki – Tavi From the Jungle Book By: Rudyard Kipling

About the Author Born in Bombay, India Famous – late 1800’s and early 1900’s Nobel Prize for Literature Even though he was English writer. Rikki – Tikki – Tavi is actually only one story from the Jungle Book which includes many poems by Kipling aswell. Youngest to achieve this prize at the time. First Englishman to win it.

Freytag’s Pyramid “Theme” Exposition – Characters and seting Rising Action – the actions that lead up to the event with the most tension Climax – this event is the climax Falling Action – story starts to return back to normal(skipping this part) Denouement – the solution to the problem(in this case the theme) “Theme”

Main Characters Rikki – Tikki - Tavi Nag and Nagaina Brave Self – centered Curious Evil

Setting India Segowlee cantonment Bungalow Summer Cantonment – Indian military station

Rising Action #1 Rikki - Tikki - Tavi Meets a Family Flood Teddy discovers Rikki Rikki – tikki explores Almost instantly becomes part of the family.

Rising Action #2 Rikki – Tikki – Tavi Encounters Nag Rikki – tikki meets Darzee. Nag crawls out and introduces himself. Nagaina attempts to bite Rikki. In this part of the story the main problem is introduced. Nag introduces himself as Brahma(important Hindu God), that is how highly he thinks of himself and his wife. Still, he is afraid of the little mongoose deep down inside.

Rising Action #3 Nag is Dead Rikki – tikki hears the black cobras’ conversation. Rikki – tikki pounces on Nag’s back. The man shoots Nag. The cobras talk about their plan to kill all of the people so Rikki – Tikki – Tavi leaves. Rikki – Tikki is shooken badly but doesn’t let go of the vicious snake’s neck. OR the big man as he is identified in the story.

Climax Rikki tricks and fights with Nagaina. Nagaina snatches her egg and dashes away. Rikki and Nagaina disappear into a tunnel. The rest of Nagaina’s eggs are in the melon bed with their tops bitten off by Rikki. While the egg is left unattended. Rikki has time to grasp onto the wicked snake's tale.

Theme ANYONE, no matter how big or small, can accomplish a great deed that everyone can appreciate. Look how small Rikki – Tikki – Tavi was, but he was able to accomplish the great deed of saving the lives of the people in the family he now belonged to.
