General Academic Information Welcome General Academic Information CPS procedures for the department Waiver procedures for assigned foundations Choosing first semester courses Departmental Information Co-ops and Internships Research opportunities TA/RA positions Capstone Options

CPS Departmental Procedures Your individual Draft CPS will be created for you in the first semester, after classes begin. SCE Academic Advisors create your Draft CPS. You will receive a UHCL email from the Academic Advisor in approximately 8-10 weeks, after classes start. The email notifies you to meet with your SWEN Faculty Advisor to evaluate your Draft CPS. At this time email your SWEN Faculty Advisor to set up an appointment to complete your Final CPS from the Draft CPS. SWEN Faculty Advisors cannot work on your CPS before you receive the email. Once the Draft CPS is mutually agreed on, the Final CPS is emailed back to the Academic Advisor becoming your Final CPS. Academic Advising emails you to sign the Final CPS in the Bayou Building Suite 3611. Once the Draft CPS is mutually agreed too by you and the SWEN Faculty Advisor, it is emailed back to the Academic Advisor for your Final CPS. Academic Advising email you sign the Final CPS in their office.

Waiver Procedures for Assigned Foundations First Semester: For your first semester at UHCL, do not register for any assigned foundation courses for which you believe you have completed equivalent class work with grade of B or better. (Some foundations were assigned to repeat based on C grades in completed classes.) You should register for any other assigned foundations. To waive foundation courses you believe you have already completed: Fill out Waiver Request Form (available in B3611) Attach all supporting documentation Make a copy for yourself Submit to Academic Advising Office B3611 Advisors will submit it to the Waiver Committee for your major.

Choosing First Semester Courses For your first semester, it is best to register for assigned foundation classes that were assigned and noted as “will not be waived” in your admission letter. You can also register for courses indicated by SWEN two year recommended plan of study @ Software Engineering website. Also refer to the current catalog for a specific list of acceptable classes for electives in SWEN. These are noted in the official SWEN curriculum in the catalog. A suggestion is to take 1 core and 2 electives or 2 core and 1 elective your first semester. If you are not sure or if you must register for an elective, email your SWEN Faculty Advisor the first week of class.

Internships and Co-ops The department of SWEN does not offer co-ops. The department of SWEN does not offer internships.

Research Assistant Opportunities Faculty members of SWEN hire student research assistants Research assistants work on: research development awards externally funded grants externally funded contracts Faculty specific research projects Research Assistant Application are online .

Teaching Assistant Opportunities The Software Engineering department hires several graduate students to serve as teaching assistants (TA). TAs help the instructor answer student questions and grade coursework. To apply review the Student Teaching Assistant Employment Processing Requirements steps.

Capstone Options Software Engineering MS SWEN 6837 Capstone Projection Option Capstone can only be taken in your last/graduating semester. You may only enroll in 9 hours total , including Capstone, in your graduating semester. Capstone requests are taken in the semester preceding the one you are graduating in. You will fill out a capstone request form and submit it to Kim Edwards/Senior Secretary Delta 151. You must attach your Final CPS to this form. This means you need to finalize your CPS and have a copy before your last semester begins. Permission numbers will be emailed to students after the grades are in for the semester preceding your last semester so that eligibility can be determined based on all course work completed before your last semester of enrollment.

Thesis Options The SWEN 6939 Master's Thesis is a rigorous process requiring both scholarly research in your field and a mind for detail. Thesis option requires coordinating with: Thesis /Faculty advisor Committee members 3 Associate Dean Dean Librarian Students will need to meet with a Thesis advisor to initiate project conception and understand thesis requirement.
