Dual Enrollment Haley LaRossa and Amy Short

2 Dual Enrollment (DE) Basics
What is Dual Enrollment? A program that allows high school students to take college courses for free and receive both high school and college credit. Roswell students can participate in Dual Enrollment courses three ways Take college courses on campus at Roswell HS College English through Georgia State Perimeter and Math through Georgia Tech for students beyond AP Calculus BC Take all courses on the college campus Must be enrolled in at least 4 college courses for this option Take some courses at Roswell and some on a college campus For a total of 6 courses

3 Quick DE Tips Determine if it is a good fit for your child
Requires student independence to communicate with college professor, check daily, etc. Parents are not allowed to communicate with college per FERPA laws Colleges have their own expectations and regulations that student must manage. Ex. Must obtain college books via a specific process and at certain times. This even applies to students taking GSU College English on RHS campus. Must be able to manage class schedule and transportation. Ex. Often college classes meet 3x per week for 1.5 hours. If taking RHS classes too, must align schedules to work and get to and from both campuses in a timely manner.

4 Quick DE Tips 2 Investigate different Dual Enrollment programs at local colleges/universities Most colleges have Dual Enrollment websites with helpful info Some colleges provide more hands on support than others depending on size, etc. Most common DE colleges amongst RHS students: Gwinnett Technical College, Georgia State Perimeter, Kennesaw State Know how college admissions offices view Dual Enrollment Typically viewed as rigorous, but not as rigorous as AP Check with each college your student wants to apply to

5 DE Requirements Once student has determined that DE is a good fit and which college to attend for DE, follow all required steps on Dual Enrollment Checklist Steps may be found here: All steps must be completed in a timely manner for participation. Failure to follow the steps may result in a student being unable to participate.

6 Dual Enrollment Timeline and Scheduling
Students are expected to meet deadlines, or schools can reschedule students for local high school courses. March 30th- FCS district deadline for completing the college application and verifying completion with counseling secretary. Summer- Students must attend college orientation (if required) and register for appropriate courses discussed with the counselor in the spring. August 1st- All students must have complete, finalized schedules at the high school, including accurate college courses listed on the high school schedule. Any students that do not provide a copy of their registered college courses to the counselor by August 1st will be rescheduled for local high school courses.

7 Your student has two schedules with Dual Enrollment…
College Schedule High School Schedule After meeting college specific requirements for registration (example: attend orientation), your student must register for the college classes discussed with the school counselor. The schedule of courses must be provided to the high school counselor to update the local high school schedule. Deadline to register for college courses and have HS schedule updated: August 1. In the spring your student will identify projected courses of interest, including dual enrollment courses. They must meet the March 30th DE application deadline Your student must be accepted to the college and provide their college course schedule to their high school counselor by August 1st, so that the official course number and title that they have registered for at the college may be input into their schedule. Having a pending college course on your high school schedule does not mean you are registered for the class- for students taking college classes on the high school campus, you will work with your counselor to be signed up for those courses (you will not register online with your college).

8 Dual Enrollment Participation- Roles and Responsibilities
Student and Parent Applying to the college by the FCS and college deadline. Submitting all required documents to complete application for admission. Set up meeting with counselor to get SPA signed and determine appropriate coursework/update course requests to dual enrollment projections. Communicating acceptance/denial to school counselor. Attend orientation if required. Set up and check college account daily. Register for college courses agreed upon with the school counselor. Complete dual enrollment funding application on GAFutures.org. Work with the college to secure FERPA waivers or services for students with disabilities if applicable. Provide school counselor a copy of your schedule before August 1st to finalize your high school schedule with correct courses. Note- students that do not meet this deadline will be rescheduled for local high school courses. Follow the college class schedule for attendance, testing, etc.… Provide final grades via official transcript to school counselor at the end of the semester. School Counselor Communicate dual enrollment opportunities to students and parents in multiple methods. Provide academic advisement to the student and answer parent questions as needed throughout the process. Sign Student Participation Agreement Form, FCS Dual Enrollment Contract, and complete Dual Enrollment Funding Application (counselor portion) once the student submits it on GAFutures.org. Ensure students high school schedule is finalized by August 1st to include accurate college courses the student is registered for and local high school courses.

9 Examples of things counselors cannot manage:
College schedule and course availability Acceptance process Troubleshooting any holds on admissions or registration- you will have to work with the college to clear holds. *Note- your counselor can re-sign another S.P.A., and/or provide guidance for best times/courses based on your high school scheduling needs. Communicating between you and the college about individualized situations (example: an absence, textbooks, a missed quiz, etc.) Your counselor is here to advise and support your dual enrollment participation process, but it is important to remember that you will be an independent college student while you are still in high school, and must meet the same expectations of an undergraduate student.
