Short response Answer the following questions on a sheet of paper (2-3 sentences each) What makes a fairy tale a fairy tale? What are the typical characteristics of the genre?

Let’s discuss: Common elements Fairy tale begins with "Once upon a time...” Fairy tales happen in the long ago. Fairy Tales have fantasy and make believe in them. Fairy Tales have clearly defined Good characters vs. Evil characters. Royalty is usually present in a fairy tale, a beautiful princess/handsome prince. There may be magic with giants, elves, talking animals, witches or fairies. Fairy tales have a problem that needs to be solved. It often takes three tries to solve the problem. Fairy tales have happy endings – “they all lived happily ever after.” Fairy tales usually teach a lesson or have a theme.

What is Satire? What do you know about it? Literal definition: A literary work that ridicules its subject through the use of techniques such as exaggeration, reversal, incongruity, and/or parody in order to make a comment or criticism about it.

Satire and the Four Techniques Exaggeration: To enlarge, increase, or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen Incongruity: To present things that are out of place or are absurd in relation to their surroundings Reversal: To present the opposite of the normal order (e.g. order of events, hierarchical order) Parody: To imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place, or thing
