Write about your Spring Break… What did you do? Who did you see? How do you feel about being back? How do you feel about only having approximately 30 days of school before exams?

Shrek and Satire

T-Chart: Left Side Write a list of as many characteristics of fairy tales as you can think of. –What defines a fairy tale? –What are the characteristics of this genre?

Common Characteristics of Fairy Tales 1. A fairy tale begins with "Once upon a time...” 2. Fairy tales happen in the long ago. 3. Fairy Tales have fantasy and make believe in them. 4. Fairy Tales have clearly defined Good characters vs. Evil characters. 5. Royalty is usually present in a fairy tale, a beautiful princess/handsome prince. 6. There may be magic with giants, elves, talking animals, witches or fairies. 7. Fairy tales have a problem that needs to be solved. 8. It often takes three tries to solve the problem. 9. Fairy tales have happy endings – “they all lived happily ever after.” 10. Fairy tales usually teach a lesson or have a theme.

Group Notes: SATIRE A literary work that ridicules its subject through the use of techniques such as exaggeration, reversal, incongruity, and/or parody in order to make a comment or criticism about it. Copy down this definition, and then rewrite it in your own words. Be prepared to share your definition with the class.

T-Chart: Right Side (Shrek Clip) 1.As you watch this clip from the movie, keep a list of all the things you see from the video that are AYTPICAL of fairy tales. Look for things the characters do and say. Look at the roles the characters play. Look at how themes, such as good v. evil, are challenged and portrayed. Examine the setting, plot structure, dialogue, etc. 2.Detect connections between each side of the chart and draw lines to match the items.

Group Notes: Satire Types Copy down each definition as we discuss it. Once we have discussed each type of satire, work with your group members to rewrite the definition in your own words and create your own examples of each one.

Exaggeration Definition: when a fact or characteristic is overstated/overdone in order to make a point. Example: Princess Fiona fights and successfully defeats Robin Hood and all of his Merry Men without any help and without any weapons.

Incongruity Definition: inconsistent with a character’s traits; something that seems far-fetched or not very likely to happen. Example: Princess Fiona uses her ponytail to deliver a knockout punch to one of the Merry Men. While frozen in a mid-air martial arts kick, Princess Fiona pauses to fix her disheveled hair before knocking out two of the Merry Men.

Reversal Definition: The roles of the hero and the damsel in distress have been reversed. Example: In this clip, it is Princess Fiona, the rescuer, who fights and defeats the foe.

Parody Definition: an imitation of something that would be largely familiar to an audience; another work that is referenced for the purpose of making a statement or “poking fun” at something. Examples: The fight scene is an exaggerated imitation of the martial arts style and special effects used in movies such as The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

T-Chart: Bottom Identify the primary comment or criticism about society that is being made by the satirical techniques in this clip from Shrek. On a sheet of paper, keep a list of examples of the different types of SATIRE that you see as we continue watching parts of the video. We will not be able to watch the entire thing- only what we can cover in class today. Before the end of class: –At least 2 examples from video of each type of satire. –One to two sentences explaining the primary criticism about society the video makes.

English I: Exit Ticket In class tomorrow we are going to begin working on a “Fairly Twisted Fairy Tales” project. As your exit ticket today, write down the name of and summarize your favorite fairy tale from when you were a child. It can be from any culture.

English III: Exit Ticket 1.What role does the DEVIL play in our society? 2.Why/how does the image of Satan represent evil? 3.Do you think sometimes people blame Satan for them behaving badly, or is there really a red, scaly demon who forces or tempts people to do evil deeds? 4.What do you think is the most evil thing going on in America right now, and do you think some supernatural force, like the devil, is responsible for it, or are we humans responsible? Explain.
