Satire

Satire Satire is a way of humorously criticizing society through characters and subjects. There are four main ways of doing this, plus the three forms of irony (we’ll get there in a few weeks).

Satirical Techniques Reversal: To present the opposite of the normal order. Reversal can focus on the order of events, or hierarchical orders. For example, a young child making all the decisions for a family. In Shrek, when the damsel and prince switch places.

Satirical Techniques Incongruity: To present things that are out of place or are absurd in relation to their surroundings. It is the lack of agreement or harmony, the lack of appropriateness and fitness. Incongruity is the quality or condition of being incongruous. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) Begin film clip at 3:30

Satirical Techniques Exaggeration: To enlarge, increase or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen. When a character who is portrayed as intelligent uses poor grammar and language, this points out a flaw or façade in his intelligence.

Satirical Techniques Parody: To imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place or thing in order to ridicule the original. For parody to be successful, the reader must know the original text that is being ridiculed. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975).
