North Assessment and Grading Guidelines Discovery 09.11.2015

Introduction What is the purpose of grades? What is the purpose of assessment? Good opportunity for a student engagement activity: -Think-pair-share -Write answers on post-its and then categorize them on the board

Learning Target I will have a better understanding of grading and assessment at North Middle School.

Purpose of Grades From a student’s point of view, rank these in order of importance and be prepared to explain your reasoning: Record keeping Measure learning Accountability Motivation Good opportunity for a student engagement strategy: -Four corners…ask students to get up and move to a corner of the room which represents the item they ranked as number 1. Students can speak with their respective groups and come up with a collective answer to share with the class. Ask if students want to change their “corner” after each group presents. To extend the activity, students can then move to the corner of the room which represents the one that they ranked the lowest and the activity can be repeated again. Use the rubber beach ball as “the talking ball.” so the person holding the ball has the floor and everyone else is responsible for active listening.

North Middle School Principles of Assessment Aligns with IB requirements Utilize a range of strategies and tools Provide feedback to improve learning Record and report student progress Use data to inform teaching and learning Provide opportunities to demonstrate mastery

Academic Honesty Ensures valid learning occurs for all students Honors the educational process Supports academic standards Violations of academic honesty include copying another student’s work plagiarizing the work of others falsifying information or data Stakes get higher as you get older Consequences can be severe! Ask students to explain what is meant by “stakes get higher as you get older.”
