CW: Director Assignment, Director Notes, Preview of Project HW: Be thinking about which director you want to research. BW: Take out the paper you’ve been writing notes on. We need to add some notes on directors.

Director Responsibilities The director is usually the person with the vision. The director works with every member of the cast, lighting, sound, and set crew. The director works with publicists and press.

Directing Styles Plotline Directors—develop a general plot and script, but allow actors to improvise and ad-lib. Spike Lee and Ben Affleck are typically plotline directors.

Directing Styles Demand Directors—Control every aspect of the film, script, and emotion. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are Demand Directors.

Directing Styles Writer Directors—prefer to work from scripts they’ve written themselves. Woody Allen and James Cameron are typically Writer Directors.

Directing Styles Collaborative Directors—Work closely with the writers so they have some say in the script. Peter Jackson is typically a Collaborative Director.

Directing Styles Director Producers—typically fund and direct their own movies. Quentin Tarantino and Tim Burton are Director Producers.
