Muscular System

ROLES of MuscLes EFFECTOR- organ that becomes active in response to NS stimulation MOTOR- consumes ATP to do work, produces heat REGULATOR- regulate bodily functions

3 types of muscle tissue Skeletal – used for mov’t, maintaining posture Striated Voluntary control by CNS attached to the bones Smooth – lines walls (bl vessels, digest. & sensory organs) Not Striated Involuntary by ANS [internal organs] Cardiac – heart Involuntary, self-initiated

Additional Features Deep Fascia – thin connective tissue – wraps around, provides support for muscle Tendon – connects muscle to bone (ropelike) Aponeurosis – connects muscle to bone (thin, flat)sometimes connects muscle to muscle

Structure of a Muscle Epimysium – conn. tissue that forms the outer surface of a muscle Perimysium - conn. tissue that separates one fascicle from another Endomysium - conn. tissue that separates one muscle fiber from another
