The Executive Branch

Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution: OATH OF OFFICE Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

-The President is widely considered the most important position in the world. -The President influences the lives of Americans as well as other people all around the world. -The President term is 4 years. They can only be elected to 2 terms (22nd Amendment). -Qualifications: 35 years old, natural born citizen, resident of the U.S. for 14 years

The different “hats” of the President Chief Executive: -ENFORCE THE LAWS -SUPERVISES FEDERAL EMPLOYES -ADMINISTERS GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS Director of Foreign Policy: -Oversees relations with foreign countries -Writes treaties -Recognizes new governments -Establishes foreign policy Chief of State: -Performs ceremonial duties -Stands as a symbol for the U.S.A.

Presidential Cabinet The Presidential Cabinet is the President’s top advisors on various issues throughout society. The different areas are called Departments, the Cabinet Member is called Secretary (except Homeland Security-Czar) 1st Cabinet-4 positions Today-15 positions!

Department of the Treasury 1789 Presidential Cabinet Department of the Treasury 1789 Supervises the collection of taxes and the printing of money Department of Defense 1947 Supervises Armed Forces Department of State 1789 Works with other countries.  Department of Agriculture 1862 Ensures a healthy food supply and provides support for farmers Department of Justice 1879 Enforces US government laws Department of the Interior 1849 Protects natural resources and wild life Department of Commerce 1903 Promotes business and job opportunities for all Americans, responsible for all copyrights, patents, and trademarks; and oversees matters related to oceans, weather, and technology.

Presidential Cabinet Department of Health and Human Services 1953 Looks after people's health and provides services including conducting medical research, preventing diseases, assuring the safety of food and drugs; providing financial assistance for low income families Department of Housing and Urban Development 1965 Oversees housing needs, and focuses on improving and developing communities Department of Labor 1913 Oversees the interests of U.S. workers Department of Transportation 1966 Oversees the nation's transportation system including highways, railroads, ports, and air travel. Department of Education 1979 Establishes guidelines and provides leadership to address American education Department of Energy 1977 Researches and develops energy systems that are friendly to the environment Department of Homeland Security 2003 Works to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage from potential attacks and natural disasters Department of Veterans Affairs 1988 Operates programs for veterans and their families

What do all of these President’s have in common? All of these Presidents were unable to finish their terms of office. 4-Assassinated 4-Died in office 1-Resigned

Line of Succession The line of people that take over in case the President is unable to perform their duties Vice President Speaker of the House President Pro Tempore Secretary of State Secretary of the Treasury Secretary of Defense Attorney General Secretary of the Interior And many more-most of them members of the Cabinet

State of the Union Address In the Constitution The President gives this yearly speech describing the status of the country Done in January (new Presidents-February Non Stop applause
