Lesson 1.1 How do you evaluate algebraic expressions and powers? To evaluate an algebraic expression, substitute the given value for the variable and then perform the operation. To evaluate a power, multiply the base by itself the number of times indicated by the exponent.

Lesson 1.2 How do you use the order of operations to evaluate an expression Always evaluate expressions using the following order: evaluate expressions inside grouping symbols, evaluate powers, multiply and divide from left to right, and then add and subtract from left to right. PEMDAS

Lesson 1.3 How do you write an expression to represent a real-world situation? Translate the verbal phrase in the problem into operations and variables, create a verbal model, and then translate the verbal model into an expression.

Lesson 1.4 How do you write equations and inequalities Use the verbal phrases associated with an equal sign and with each type of inequality symbol to determine whether to write an equation or an inequality.

Lesson 1.5 How can you use a problem solving plan to solve a problem? By the steps in the plan you can identify what you need to know, decide on a strategy to use, carry out the strategy, and then check that the answer you calculate is reasonable.

Lesson 1.6 How do you represent functions as tables and as rules? To create a table for a function, use the domain of the function as the input values and apply the function rule to each input to find its corresponding output. To write a rule for a function, determine the pattern that links each dependent variable (output y) to its corresponding independent variable(input x)

Lesson 1.7 How do you represent functions as graphs? You can graph a function by using its domain and function rule to create an input-output table, and then by graphing points for each ordered pair in the table.
