The El Paso 2YC-4YC Connection Communication! Students, faculty, staff, administrators Collaborative opportunities: service learning, research, field trips (funding helps!) Assessment: Difficult! Tracking enrollment and degree completion

GP-EXTRA: TU GEO Careers (Towson University Geoscience Educational Opportunities for Careers) Small but growing program 60 – 70% of Geology majors transfer in; ~40% from 2 YCs One portion of grant is improving pathways from 2 YCs Building connections with 2 YC faculty Developing formal articulation agreements as well as web pages with info on courses to take at 2 YCs Improved transfer advising: now done by geosciences faculty Assessment/evaluation: ??? Transfer from 2 YC Transfer

Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Course SUREC Kusali Gamage1 , Hugh Daigle2, Chammi Miller2 1Austin Community College, Austin, TX. 2 University of Texas, Austin, TX. SUREC 2017 Cohort One of several goals of the SUREC program is to increase transfer rates of Austin community College geology students to four-year institutions SUREC Evaluation Surveys (URSSA: Undergraduate Research Student Self-Assessment) knowledge tests faculty assessment of student performance & skills; student project records institutional research data Project Details 12 weeks, three-credit-hour course Open to second-year students interested in STEM disciplines Twelve stipend-supported positions Students conduct research at UT Austin, Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering

FRCC PI: Patrick Shabram; UNAVCO PI: Donna Charlevoix NSF IUSE GeoPaths: Extra: Geo-Launchpad Collaborative grant between Front Range Community College (FRCC) and UNAVCO Multi-component experience, including 8-week summer internships: interns work with UNAVCO staff Faculty mentor training at UNAVCO - all faculty mentor applicants are invited to participate [2017] FRCC-developed Special Topics Seminar on careers in the geosciences; available in statewide course catalog Pre-REU summer internship includes skills seminar, communications workshop, and career circles Faculty member from each intern’s home institution visits UNAVCO for 2 days and supports intern back at school; Discuss importance of mentoring as well as best practices Website: www.unavco.org/geolaunchpad

Focus on at-risk, “budding” geologist GP: EXTRA: PLUGGING THE LEAKY GEOSCIENCE PIPELINE: AN EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAM BRIDGING GEOSCIENCE STUDENTS AT LINN-BENTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY Deron Carter, Linn-Benton Community College Shanaka de Silva, Oregon State University HIGHLIGHTS Focus on at-risk, “budding” geologist Develop a cohort to combat transfer shock Participate in field trips to tie cognates to geoscience practice Work in a collaborative lab setting to access professional networks, build research skills MEASURING SUCCESS Evaluate improvement in student knowledge, skills (grades, rubrics) Evaluate changes in student self-efficacy, peer-to-peer support, feeling part of a professional network (interviews)

Fort Lewis College GP-EXTRA: Supporting the Academic and Social Integration of Incoming Transfer Students Key program elements Supports new transfers + transfers within past year Sophomore field course taught in August Financial support during summer course Field trips to introduce faculty/local geology Support to attend GSA Financial support for senior thesis research Evaluation Formative: Participation in activities Focus group/survey – which components useful; social/academic capital questions Fall grades Summative (planned): Persistence Time to graduation AGI graduates survey Senior thesis assessment
