Map Skills Revision Lesson to be done in book or MWB

On your mini whiteboard label the compass

Let’s see how you’ve done….

Complete the map symbol starter sheet… how many do you know?

Map symbol quiz… Write down number 1 – 14 and then answer what the map symbols are…

Answers…

4 figure grid references Read along the bottom first till you get to correct column – the number is always to the left/lower one of the two

4 figure grid references Move up the side till you find the correct row. The number is the lower one of the row/the bottom of the two

Your Task Complete the 4 and 6 figured map worksheets…

Scale What does scale on a map mean? Give two ways that you can measure scale on a map

Scale…. Look for a scale bar – use your ruler to work out how many centimetres (cm) for 1 kilometres (km) For example: 2cm = 1 km There are two main ways: Using a ruler for straight line distances Using a piece of string or paper to measure curved distances

Your turn…. The scale is 1cm = 15km Miss Bloomer measures a line that is 5cm. How long is it in KM? Mr Still measures a line that is 10cm. How long is it in KM? Miss Salt measures a line that is 15cm. How long is it in KM?

Symbol Bingo The Rules: No False Shouting out Bingo Ensure you know what each symbol means Put your hand up when you have house (all 9 matched). 4. You will be required to tell the teacher the meaning of each symbol.

THE BINGO CARD

CHOOSE 9 OF THE FOLLOWING SYMBOLS AND DRAW THEM ON ANY SQUARE OF YOUR CARD

Every Time your symbol appears on the board put a cross through it X

Eyes down get ready to play:

Game 2

Lesson 2

What does relief mean?

Answer: Relief Relief tells us the shape and the height of a hill or slope Name the three ways that a map can show us this….

Contour lines There are brown lines that form circle-like shapes on a map. These tell us how steep a hill is. If we only look at part of the line, we can read how steep the slope is

Contour lines A steep slope looks like this A gentle slope looks like this Contour lines Lots of mountains! Like in Scotland Very flat land! Like in Cambridge

Spot heights Spot heights These are the numbers which show the exact height of a given point. The triangle is the highest point of the hill 330 260 210 180 130 70 20

Layer colouring Green = less than 100m Yellow = 100-200m Orange = 200-300m Brown = 300m+

Split your page into positive things about where a settlement should be located and negative things about where a settlement located…. Steep relief (slopes) Near a main road Far away from other towns Near a river Near a farm Fall away from a forest Fall from a main road Fall from a river Near a National Trust house Close to another town Near forest

Imagine that you are planning to build a housing estate explain the positive and negative reasons…. Steep relief (slopes) Near a main road Far away from other towns Near a river Near a farm Fall away from a forest Fall from a main road Fall from a river Near a National Trust house Close to another town Near forest

Look at an OS Map: Where would you build your housing estate? For this you must give a 6 figured grid reference and explain why you would build your housing estate there 2) Where wouldn’t you build your housing estate? For this you must give a 6 figured grid reference and explain why you would not build your housing estate there
