3. Map skills Comparing rural settlements in France
This is the scale of the map
OS Maps are always 1:50,000 unless stated otherwise.
This means that 1cm on your ruler is equal to 50,000cm on the map.
This means it is 1cm:500m OR
2cm:1km
Sometimes it is 1:25,000
This means 1cm: 250m OR 4cm:1km
These are contour lines
They tell us the relief of the land
The closer together they are the steeper the land
They have numbers on them and they increase in 10 or 5 metres per line.

4. Map skills Comparing rural settlements in France
Grid references
X axis grid references
Y axis grid references
FIRST always read along the x axis (along the stairs)
THEN read up the y axis (up the stairs)
Read the reference at the bottom left corner of the square you want to refer to.
For example 'Beckhampton Penning' is in grid square 6709.
A six figure grid reference refers to a specific thing. For example 'What building is ?'
First find where 6711 is as this is the four figure grid reference. From there find where the '0.5' point from left corner of 67. Work your way up to half-way of 67 and 68.
